How Life Insurance Can Empower Charitable Giving
Life insurance is a versatile and often underutilized tool in charitable planning. This continuing education session explores how donors can leverage life insurance to make a significantly larger philanthropic impact than may be possible through lifetime cash gifts—while also realizing meaningful tax and financial benefits.
Participants will gain a clear understanding of the strategic advantages of charitable life insurance gifts, including increased giving capacity, estate tax mitigation, enhanced financial flexibility, and the ability to create a lasting legacy. The program will also cover practical structuring options, such as naming a charity as beneficiary, transferring ownership of an existing policy, or establishing a new policy for charitable purposes.
Designed for fundraising and planned giving professionals, this session will provide both conceptual insight and practical guidance to support informed conversations with donors and advisors.
The program will feature Chris Lyon of The Frieden Agency and Commonwealth Benefits as our speaker.
About the speaker:
As an insurance specialist, Chris Lyon’s mission is to draw on his passion and education to help individuals and businesses realize their specific goals while utilizing the vast experience of The Frieden Agency. He consults with both individuals and business clients regarding their short- and long-term goals, objectives, dreams, and risk tolerance. From there, a strategy is built based on the client’s individual profile in order to maximize all resources. With a concentration on risk management, Chris guides clients to their desired individual or business goals. This may include – but is not limited to – disability insurance, life insurance, long-term care insurance, health insurance, and complete employee benefit packages. Chris is a lifetime resident of Hampton Roads. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1998 with a Liberal Arts degree and minors in Psychology and Communications. Chris and his wife, Stephanie, have three beautiful daughters, Holly, Tori, and Laney. Outside of the office, Chris enjoys golfing, surfing, and swimming.

About the Frieden Agency:
The Frieden Agency began operating in 1928. Founded by the late Jack J. Leterman, the Agency has always focused on meeting the needs of business owners and individuals by offering employee benefits and life insurance planning. In the late 1990s, the Agency augmented its focus on retirement planning services and wealth management. This led to the creation of the Frieden Wealth Management arm of the Agency.
